An overview of a good sewing machine

A sewing machine is most likely found in every home as it happens to be an important tool. These machines are used for fixing buttons, tighten the loose clothes and vice versa. The latest sewing machines have several advanced features and are very convenient to function.

What is a sewing machine?

A machine that sews materials and fabric with the help of a thread is a sewing machine. These machines were made at the time of the Industrial Revolution to reduce the manual sewing process carried at the time. It is believed that Englishman Thomas Saint and Elias Howe invented the sewing machine in the year 1790.

Home sewing machines are made for an individual to sew different items by using a single stitch at a time. In a contemporary sewing machine, the stitching procedure has been automated in such a way that the fabric goes in and out of the machine effortlessly. Traditional sewing machines used to function by turning a handle continuously. However, electrically-powered machines came into the picture later on.

Industrial sewing machines happen to be quick, large, and also different in their appearance and cost.

Sewing Machines are classified according to their working, embroidery, and quilting.

There are five types of sewing machines:

  • Electronic Sewing Machine
  • Mechanical Sewing Machine
  • Embroidery Machine
  • Overlock Sewing Machine or serger
  • Automated Sewing Machine

Main components of a sewing machine

The key components of a sewing machine are:

  • Slot for needle thread
  • Needle
  • Wingnut for loosening and taking off the needle
  • Handwheel for accurate control and slow-motion sewing
  • Stitch length adjustment
  • Drawer consisting of shuttle and bobbin
  • Stitch control

How does a sewing machine work?

The electric motor is situated at the base of the machine. With the help of a pulley set, it runs the huge handwheel present on top, i.e. the wheel is employed to stitch slowly.

There exist 3 main mechanisms in a sewing machine.

  1. Needle mechanism

This happens to be the easiest mechanism. The gray shaft operates a wheel as well as a crankshaft that results in the needle to rise and fall. The crank translates the rotary motion into the needle’s up-and-down motion.

  1. Bobbin and shuttle mechanism

The shuttle and hook are used to make stitches from the needle thread that must rotate a bit faster when compared to the needle. Therefore, the gray shaft should turn the shuttle quickly using gears.

  1. Feed-dog mechanism

The feed-dog mechanism of the sewing machine ensures stitches of equal length by functioning forwards and upwards simultaneously. This is performed through two interconnected mechanisms operated by the main shaft. Moreover, a feed-dog goes upward and forward, thereby moving the material through the machine step by step.

Our day to day life has gotten a lot easier because of best sewing machines . It made sewing fabric and materials together quickly and in a very simple way. There wouldn’t be any supply of good clothes if it wasn’t for the invention of the sewing machine.
